War Resources

The stories in this resource relate to war themes and are linked to the Devil’s Porridge Museum in Eastriggs. One of the stories has also been adapted from Michael Foreman’s book Stubby, A True Story of Friendship.
War stories are a valuable resource in the curriculum for all children and for children, young people and adults with profound and multiple learning disabilities (PMLD) who want to continue to explore lifelong learning opportunities. Communities too can access and add to the resource as they wish.

The stories in this resource have been adapted to enable people with PMLD to engage with war time stories in a multisensory and emotionally safe way. The simple narrative in the stories are accompanied with sensory stimuli and objects that support engagement. The sensory stimuli accompanying the stories also help facilitate object based learning, allowing learners to engage in a tactile way, making concrete connections to abstract ideas, enabling active participation in the story.
Providing an immersive experience through drama and storytelling also encourages turn taking, choice making, engagement and connection with those experiencing the story with you but also it provides an opportunity to connect with the past.

The stories in the resource were carefully written and adapted to help people with PMLD to explore:

-
Friendship and loyalty
-
Courage and fear
-
Home and Family
-
Peace and remembrance

The process of creating your own objects to accompany the story offers further opportunities to deepen understanding of the story as well as enhancing engagement and communication. It’s often not the outcome that is the end goal but what we learn on the journey. This adds another layer to the learning journey, and it is fun!
